The Name and the Teaching
花 Hana
The name
Hana is Japanese for flower. A flower can't be forced open. Given soil, water, light and time, it opens on its own. None of us can force our best selves into being either, but we can create the conditions for them. Yoga is one of the most effective tools we know for that. It helps us see our conditions clearly, and it gives us the means to change them.Patanjali says much the same (Yoga Sutra 4.3). Practice doesn't turn us into something new. Like a farmer clearing a channel so the water finds its own way, it removes what stands in the way. One meaning of the word he uses for that breaking through is blossoming. The seal
The logo is a seal like the ones Japanese and Chinese artists press in red onto a finished work. The character is 花, hana. At its top is the sign for plants and grasses, 艹. Beneath is 化, change or transformation, which began as a picture of one figure standing and another turned over. A flower is, quite literally, a plant in the act of changing. It is cut as a white-text seal. The character is carved out of the stone, and what prints is the paper showing through. The flower is made of what has been taken away. Practice works the same way: less by adding than by clearing away. The edges are uneven, the way cut stone is, because Zen has always found beauty in what is left a little unfinished. Beneath the seal, the name is set plainly.Simplicity
More than anything, Zen has shaped this school, above all through Zen Flesh, Zen Bones. Its lesson is simplicity: fewer ideas, less decoration, more direct attention to what is actually here. The book closes with an ancient Indian meditation text that its compiler believed might be the root of Zen itself. Yoga and Zen are two roads that keep meeting. The raft
The Buddha compared his teaching to a raft. It is for crossing the river, not for carrying on your back once you reach the far shore. Ashtanga yoga is that raft. It is the whole eight-limbed path, and a support for an entire life: ethics, self-discipline, posture, breath, withdrawal of the senses, concentration, meditation and absorption. Patanjali gives posture only a few lines. The postures matter, but they aren't the point.Freedom
We read the Yoga Sutras as, at heart, a manual of liberation. They share the Buddha's diagnosis: suffering, its cause, its end, and a way out. They grew from the same soil as his teaching and share much of its language. Sutra 1.33 names the four qualities the Buddha taught, in the same words: friendliness, compassion, joy and equanimity. Even the oldest known text teaching hatha yoga was written in a Buddhist setting. Yoga isn't exercise. It is a discipline of freedom.Letting go
Patanjali rests everything on two things, steady practice and letting go (1.12). He asks us to let go even of the highest attainments (3.51). That applies to teachers too. A school that holds on to its students with endless classes, programs and workshops works against what yoga is for.So Yoga Hana deliberately runs programs only a few times a year. Between them, students take what they've learned and practise it on their own. Modern yoga has sold the idea that you need to keep coming back to a studio, day after day. Neither yoga nor Zen ever taught that. A Zen master once told a seeker who had come to him looking for enlightenment that he already had his own treasure house, so why search outside it? A teacher can show the way, but the student has to walk it. As one senior teacher in this lineage put it, the best thing a student can eventually do is make the teacher unnecessary. It isn't much of a business model, but it is good yoga.Small by design
Yoga was never meant to scale. The original shala in Mysore had room for eight students at a time, and a simple rule: no advertising. Classes here stay small. Yoga Hana doesn't chase students, and it does not use social media.
Before You Come
How do I get the class link?
By email before your first class. Classes run live on Proton video, which opens in your web browser. No account or app is needed. There are no recordings. What do I need for an online class?
A mat, a quiet space and a steady internet connection. If you can, place your camera so I can see your whole mat, and join a few minutes early. What should I have for Pranayama?
Tissues, and a cushion or folded blanket to sit on.What is Mysore practice?
You practise at your own pace, and I work with each student individually. New students learn the sequence a few postures at a time, so you don't need to know it before you come. What time is class where I live?
Times are listed in Bangkok and North American time. North American clocks go back one hour on Sunday, Nov 1, the day Pranayama begins. The times shown already allow for this.Where are the Mysore locations?
They are announced in the newsletter first, then emailed to everyone registered. What if I miss a class?
All sales are final. Missed classes are not refunded, credited or rescheduled.

If Yoga Hana permanently discontinues an Offering you have paid for and cannot provide a reasonable substitute, you will receive a prorated refund for the sessions not delivered.10.6 Your statutory rights. Nothing in these Terms limits any right you have under the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act (British Columbia) or other law that cannot be waived by agreement. For example, if your purchase is a continuing services contract under that Act (such as a membership or a pass for classes over a period of time), you may cancel it: (a) for any reason within ten (10) days after you receive your copy of the contract, for a full refund; (b) if a physical or mental disability makes it unreasonable for you to continue, or you move more than thirty (30) kilometres farther from where the Offering takes place, for a prorated refund less any administrative costs the law allows; or (c) if Yoga Hana stops providing the services substantially as described, or moves them more than thirty (30) kilometres farther away without a reasonable alternative, for a prorated refund. If you are removed or your access is ended because you breached these Terms, all remaining sessions and purchases are forfeited without refund or credit.12.3 Other endings. Some of our service providers may store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States (Carrd and Buttondown are U.S.-based services), where it may be subject to the laws of that country.14.7 How long we keep it. Yoga Hana keeps your personal information for one (1) year after your last interaction with us (such as your last session, purchase or message) and then securely deletes it, with these limited exceptions:(a) financial records (such as receipts, invoices and payment records) are kept for as long as tax law requires, which is generally six (6) years;(b) your signed acceptance of these Terms and any incident or injury record are kept for three (3) years after your last participation, or longer if a claim is made or reasonably expected, solely so that Yoga Hana can protect its legal rights; and(c) any information Yoga Hana is otherwise required by law to keep.14.8 Website and cookies. Yoga Hana does not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels or third-party marketing tools. Our website host, Carrd, may use cookies that are needed for the site to work and for basic, anonymous site statistics.14.9 Security. Yoga Hana uses reasonable safeguards to protect your personal information against loss, theft and unauthorized access. No system is completely secure, but if a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, Yoga Hana will notify you.14.10 Your rights. You may ask to see or correct your personal information, or ask for it to be deleted early (subject to Section 14.7), by emailing [email protected]. Yoga Hana will respond within the time required by law. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (www.oipc.bc.ca).15. Communications and Newsletter15.1 Service messages. Yoga Hana will send you messages about your bookings by email, such as confirmations, reminders, schedule changes and updates to these Terms. These are not marketing messages.15.2 Newsletter, only if you choose. Apart from its monthly newsletter, Yoga Hana does not send marketing. Yoga Hana sends its newsletter only to people who have agreed to receive it, and subscribing is never a condition of purchase. Every newsletter identifies Yoga Hana, includes our contact information and an easy unsubscribe option, and unsubscribe requests are processed promptly and within ten (10) business days, as Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation requires.15.3 Notices. Yoga Hana may send you notices under these Terms to the email address you provided. Please keep it up to date.16. Limitation of Liability16.1 Cap. To the fullest extent permitted by law, and in addition to Section 4, the total liability of Yoga Hana and the other Released Parties for any claim arising from or related to these Terms or any Offering, whether in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise, will not exceed the amount you actually paid to Yoga Hana for the specific Offering that gave rise to the claim.16.2 Excluded losses. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Yoga Hana and the other Released Parties are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special or punitive damages, or for loss of income, earnings or opportunity.16.3 No guaranteed results. Offerings are provided "as is". Yoga Hana does not guarantee any particular result, including any change in flexibility, strength, fitness, weight, health or wellbeing.16.4 Law prevails. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.17. Changes to Offerings and Events Outside Our Control17.1 Changes. Yoga Hana may change schedules, instructors, locations, content and format (including moving a session online) and will give reasonable notice where possible. If Yoga Hana cancels a session, Section 10.5 applies.17.2 Events outside our control. Yoga Hana is not liable for any failure or delay caused by events beyond its reasonable control, including instructor illness or injury, severe weather, natural disaster, fire, flood, power or internet outages, platform outages, public health orders, government action, loss of access to a venue, or other emergencies. In those cases, the remedy in Section 10.5 is your only remedy.17.3 Retreats, travel and third-party providers. For retreats and off-site events: (a) any additional terms, payment schedule and cancellation terms shown at the time of purchase also apply; (b) you are responsible for your own travel arrangements, travel documents and insurance, and Yoga Hana strongly recommends travel and trip-cancellation insurance; (c) accommodation, transportation, food, venue and activity providers are independent third parties, and Yoga Hana is not responsible for their acts, omissions, services or facilities; and (d) optional activities you choose to take part in are at your own risk and are covered by Section 4.17.4 Dietary needs and allergies. Where food is provided, you must tell Yoga Hana in advance about any allergy or dietary requirement. Yoga Hana will make reasonable efforts to accommodate it but cannot guarantee that any food is free of allergens.18. Changes to These Terms18.1 Updates. Yoga Hana may update these Terms from time to time. The current version will always be posted on the website with its effective date. Yoga Hana will notify active clients of material changes by email. If a change would apply to an Offering you have already purchased (such as a membership or class pack), Yoga Hana will email you at least thirty (30) and not more than sixty (60) days before it takes effect, explaining the change, and if the change increases your obligations or reduces Yoga Hana's, you may cancel that purchase without charge or penalty.18.2 When changes apply. Updated Terms apply from their effective date to new purchases and to participation from that date. An update will not reduce your rights for an Offering you have already paid for unless you agree.18.3 Acceptance of updates. Yoga Hana may ask you to accept updated Terms before your next session. Continuing to register or take part after being notified of updated Terms also means you accept them.19. Governing Law and Disputes19.1 Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.19.2 Talk to us first. If a concern or dispute arises, we encourage you to contact Yoga Hana in writing first; most concerns can be resolved quickly and informally. This is not a condition of any claim, and nothing in these Terms limits your right to bring a claim in court or before the Civil Resolution Tribunal.19.3 Where disputes are decided. Any dispute will be decided only by the courts and tribunals of British Columbia (including the Civil Resolution Tribunal, where it has jurisdiction), and you agree to their exclusive jurisdiction.20. General20.1 Entire agreement. These Terms, together with the Offering details shown at purchase, are the entire agreement between you and Yoga Hana. They replace all earlier verbal or written statements, and can only be changed in writing by Yoga Hana (including under Section 18).20.2 Order of priority. If anything on the website, in an FAQ, an email or any other communication conflicts with these Terms, these Terms prevail.20.3 Severability. If any part of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, it will be enforced to the greatest extent permitted, and the rest of these Terms will remain in full force and effect.20.4 No waiver. If Yoga Hana does not enforce any part of these Terms, or makes an exception in one case, that does not waive its right to enforce these Terms later or in any other case.20.5 Assignment. You may not transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms. Yoga Hana may transfer its rights and obligations, including the benefit of Section 4, to any successor to the business (for example, a company that carries on the Yoga Hana business).20.6 Survival. Sections 4, 11, 13, 14, 16, 19 and 20, and any other provision that by its nature should continue, survive the end of your participation.20.7 Interpretation. Headings are for convenience only. "Including" means "including without limitation".
